Business Without Boundaries
Description
The widespread adoption of digital cameras and the internet has created significant problems for established photographers. The competition is seemingly endless. Most forms of information -- including photography -- have become relatively devalued, to the point of being a near-commodity. And yet, for creatives who are willing to think entrepreneurially, new opportunities are being created every day.
How do you create or enhance a business in the midst of a glut of competition? How do you get noticed when you are up against more established professionals?
Photography may be your product, but learning to use your various platforms is the key to accessing the work that is available within your community. In this class, we'll learn to think like a startup, how to leverage your abilities and how to be proactive in establishing relationships with potential clients. You'll learn how to control the direction of your business as you build your portfolio and create relationships.
Whether you shoot weddings, portraits, corporate, architecture or anything else, we'll look at unique examples and solutions -- including ones specific to the students in the class. Just like water always flows downhill, if you truly want to be somewhere there's generally a way to get there.
David Hobby spent 20 years as a staff photojournalist before founding Strobist.com in 2006. Having built a business model that bridges photography and education, he continually studies and consults with businesses ranging from individual photographers to tech startups to established Silicon Valley companies.
