Level: Photography - AdvancedMore info
Most aspiring professional photographers become interested in trying to make an income from photography simply because they love taking pictures and feel that they are rather good at it. Usually they have photographed the things that attract them visually with little regard for who might want to pay for such work – such is the nature of a hobby!
Your portfolio is the basis of your attempt to break into professional photography. The photography industry is more competitive than ever and the quality and relevance of the work you present is critical. Be it a book of prints, a website or an iPhone or presentation (or all three!), your portfolio is the showcase of your abilities and the qualitative benchmark for your prospective clients.
In this workshop, award-winning photographer Richard Allenby-Pratt will help to guide your work in a direction that will ultimately win you business. This is a unique opportunity to get practical advice that can transform your photography career.
About Richard
Richard Allenby-Pratt is a photographer based in Dubai, UAE. Professionally, most of his work is in the advertising and design industries, and he is probably best known for his automotive images for Mercedes, Rolls-Royce, Toyota, Audi, Chevrolet and Nissan, to name but a few.
It's less well known that he also occasionally works as a documentary photographer for international editorial publications such as The New York Times, Time Magazine, The Guardian, Der Spiegel and Geo Germany Magazine. Whenever appropriate, he tries to incorporate this approach and style into his commercial photography.
He is passionately committed to his personal art projects and exhibiting them.
Since winning Silver at the London Association of Photographer's Awards in 1999, Richard has won a number of other significant awards including Middle East Advertising Photographer of the Year in 2002 and The Al Thani Photography Award in Qatar in 2003. More recently Richard won Silver in Px3 2011 in Paris and has again been selected for this year's 2011 AOP Awards in London.
Workshop description
On the first day of the workshop Richard will present an overview of the current marketplace and industry trends, before moving on to discuss student’s particular photographic interests and which clients would be most appropriate for their work and style.
Having highlighted potential clients, the discussion will move on to how to tailor your portfolio to appeal to those clients, understanding your potential client’s business and how to apply that knowledge to your work.
The various methods of presenting your portfolio will be discussed, however the focus of this workshop is on the work you are presenting, rather than being a technical guide to printing, setting up a website or creating a presentation.
After day one, Richard will prepare an individual professional brief for you and send this to you by email, requesting an appropriate email presentation of work from you. You will have at least ten days to prepare a response.
The group will reconvene for the final session of the workshop two weeks after day one. During day two, students will present their portfolio in response to the professional brief they received. The group will discuss each presentation and Richard will offer his appraisal of your portfolio from a client perspective, feedback, gap analysis and advice to improve the presentation of your work.
Richard will round the workshop by presenting sample portfolios from other respected Dubai-based photographers from a variety of fields for the group to review and discuss. This is an unmissable opportunity to get an industry insider’s look at how successful, established photographers present their work.
